DURHAM, N.C. — Senior Daniel Azallion recorded his first top-20 of the season to lead the Virginia Tech men’s golf team to a 10th-place showing at the Rod Myers Invitational, which concluded Saturday at Duke University Golf Club (par 72, 7,154 yards).

 

Azallion amassed 11 birdies over the two-day event to tie for 11th at 1-under 215 (72-70-73). Leading the Hokies for the second straight tournament, Azallion finished just one shot outside the top 10. Tech totaled an 18-over 882 (298-291-293) as a team.

 

Junior Charlie Hanson matched Azallion with 11 birdies for the Hokies to place 34th at 5-over 221. The Richmond, Virginia native got off to a hot start in Sunday’s final round, making the turn at 4-under 32.

 

Sophomore David Stanford tied for 37th at 8-over 224 following an even-par 72 in his final round. Junior Kobe Valociek (225) and freshman Mehrbaan Singh (232) tied for 43rd and 69th, respectively, to round out Tech’s lineup.

 

Behind a 1-2 finish at the top of the individual leaderboard, Alabama cruised to the team victory at 13-under 851 (289-281-281). Tournament host Duke took runner-up at 2-under 862, followed by Charlotte at 1-under 863.

 

The Crimson Tide’s Canon Claycomb cruised to a six-shot victory over his teammate Thomas Ponder for medalist honors. Claycomb signed for an 11-under 205 (69-71-65), while Ponder returned a 5-under 211 (71-69-71). In all, Alabama placed three of its golfers in the top three of the standings.

 

Tech is next in action at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate, Oct. 9-11, at Blackthorn Club in Jonesborough, Tennessee.
