The Philadelphia Phillies’ dreams of the National League Championship Series got an early bump Saturday when Brandon Marsh launched a three-run home run into the stands in the second inning over the Atlanta Braves. The Phillies lead the best-of-five series by a 2-1 margin, and will host Saturday’s game. If the Phillies do advance, they’ll play the winner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres series for the pennant.
The Phillies started righty Noah Syndergaard, who threw an inning in relief in Game 2. Syndergaard made 25 appearances during the regular season, both starts and out of the bullpen, and tallied a 103 ERA+ and a 3.06 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He throws five pitches 10 percent of the time or more, including his sinker, slider, and changeup a combined 70-plus percent.
The Braves countered with veteran Charlie Morton, himself no stranger to October baseball. He started 31 times in the regular season and had a 94 ERA+ and a 3.25 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Morton relies heavily on his curveball and his heater.

JT’s inside the park home run
I’ve done my own research … it was the first ever by a Phillies player in the playoffs AND first ever by a catcher.

That was amazing. No notes.

Morton is done
Morton stayed in the game last year after a broken leg. This time he was hit with a line drive and stayed in the game. He came back out and took his warmups for the third inning, but then pulled himself. He must be hurt again. Terrible luck.

Thor through three
Given that the Phillies had action in the pen, and given that Syndergaard has now faced 10 batters, I think his day may be over. We’ll see.

Braves get one back
Orlando Arcia homers. It’s the Braves’ second HR of the series after they led the NL (by a healthy margin) in the regular season.

October Orlando
Arcia puts the Braves on the board with a solo shot. He had some randomly amazing postseason series with the Brewers.

Oof. Two-strike count on the No. 9 hitter too.

Holy smokes
Three-run HR, Brandon Marsh. Wow.

Phillies in business
They had runners on the corners with no outs in the first and couldn’t score. They have runners at the corners with one out now here in the second. Can’t keep wasting these opportunities.

Phillies again with runners on the corners
This time there’s one out. Brandon Marsh coming up before the powerful top of the order. Morton could use a grounder at a defender.

Morton hit with a liner again
Remember that Charlie Morton broke his leg in Game 1 of the World Series last year when a liner struck his shin. He just got hit with a liner again, this time in his elbow area. He took some warmups and he’ll stay in the game. For now. Remember, he stayed in Game 1 last year and then apologized for not going deeper into the game. With a broken leg.

Syndergaard through 2
We speculated earlier he might not be long for this game by design. He’s now through two scoreless.

Just a heads up
Apparently the Braves should have gotten special treatment in scheduling. I’m sure everyone else feels bad for them.

Morton works out of his own jam
The Phillies got a walk and single for runners on first and third with no out and Morton was on the ropes early, but he struck out Realmuto and Harper before getting a Castellanos pop out and the box score shows zeroes for the first.

Worth noting Syndergaard pitched in relief in Game 1 of this series. Makes me think you’re correct that his role will be limited, with Falter still playing a part.

Phillies’ pitching plan
Syndergaard is starting, but I’m not sure this will be a full 100-ish pitch start. I wonder if the plan is Syndergaard through the lineup once, Bailey Falter through the lineup once, then figure it out after that.

Welcome to Game 4
First game of the day is Braves vs. Phillies with Philadelphia having a chance to advance to the NLCS for the first time since 2010. If the Braves win, Game 5 is tomorrow in Atlanta.
